In praise of Duché D’Uzès and its leisurely pace of life

This is the newest of the Rhône Valley appellations, brimming with unexpected delights -- if you take the time to explore. Established in 2012, the Duché d’Uzès AOP stretches from the plains of Uzège to the foothills of the Cévennes, offering the perfect setting to linger, take leisurely strolls, and of course, enjoy the local wine.

• Our top tips for a ‘slow tourism’ experience: a walk and a picnic

How familiar are you with the landscape of Duché d’Uzès? It’s characterized by sun-drenched, south-facing hillsides dotted with capitelles, the traditional dry-stone vineyard cabins. Vines have been grown here since Roman times, alongside a mixed farming system based mainly on fruit production. Olive, peach and apricot trees, as well as  truffle oaks (Duché d’Uzès is renowned for its black winter truffles) thrive in this climate shaped by both Mediterranean and Cévennes influences.

Just 15 minutes from Uzès, Caveau de Bourdic  has created its own ‘Vines, wines and heritage’ themed trail to help you explore the area.  This easy walking trail weaves through the estate’s vineyards, then takes you through the historic village of Bourdic, offering breathtaking views of the Uzès region and the Cévennes. Information panels along the way provide insights into viticulture, the winemaking process, the Duché appellations and the various grape varieties grown.

And as an added bonus:

Not only is the trail open to the public, but Caveau de Bourdic also provides a free guidebook, and offers wine tasting sessions.

In nearby Saint-Maximin (20 minutes south-east of Uzès), Domaine de l’Aqueduc can put together a picnic basket to add a gourmet touch to your vineyard adventure.  And you don’t have to worry about a thing. Everything is provided: tablecloth, cutlery, glasses, chopping board, locally-sourced foods and, of course, a bottle of wine of your choice. Your only task is to enjoy the experience!
